"Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!" —Philippians 2:7-8
Brother, let’s talk about what it really means to choose character over comfort. Our culture tempts us to prioritize convenience, success, and self-preservation. But Jesus Christ—the ultimate example of godly manhood—chose a path that was anything but comfortable. He chose humility over pride, sacrifice over selfishness, and obedience over personal ease.
If we are to be men of God, we must follow His lead. Choosing Christlike character isn’t just an ideal—it’s a daily battle to live differently, to reflect His love and strength in a world that pushes us toward comfort at the cost of our souls.
Jesus: The Perfect Model of Character
1. He Chose Humility Over Status
Jesus didn’t cling to His position as the Son of God but willingly humbled Himself to serve humanity.
Philippians 2:6-7: "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant."
2. He Chose Obedience Over Comfort
Jesus knew the cost of obedience, yet He embraced it fully—even to the point of death on the cross.
John 6:38: "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me."
3. He Chose Sacrifice Over Self-Preservation
Jesus endured suffering, rejection, and death out of love for us, modeling the ultimate act of selflessness.
Romans 5:8: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
What Does This Mean for Us?
If we’re serious about following Jesus, His example challenges us to live differently:
1. Put Others First
Like Jesus, we are called to serve others with humility, putting their needs above our own.
Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
2. Choose God’s Will Over Our Own
Following God means surrendering our plans, desires, and comforts to His perfect will.
Matthew 26:39: "Yet not as I will, but as you will."
3. Embrace Sacrifice
Being a man of God often requires us to make sacrifices for our families, communities, and faith.
Luke 9:23: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
How Following Jesus Transforms Us
We Become More Like Him
As we imitate Christ’s character, His humility, love, and strength become evident in our lives.
2 Corinthians 3:18: "And we all . . . are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory."
We Inspire Others
Our example of Christlike character encourages those around us to pursue Him as well.
Matthew 5:16: "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
We Lead with Courage
Choosing character over comfort equips us to face life’s challenges with boldness and integrity.
Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
How to Follow Christ’s Example
Examine Your Priorities
What are you prioritizing in your life? Comfort, status, or character?
Commit to Daily Obedience
Ask God each day, “What do You want from me today?”
Serve Others Sacrificially
Look for opportunities to put others’ needs above your own, just as Jesus did.
Seek Strength in Community
Surround yourself with brothers in Christ who challenge and encourage you to grow.
Challenge of the Week
Reflect on Jesus’s Example: Spend time meditating on Philippians 2:7-8.
Identify One Area of Growth: Where is God calling you to prioritize character over comfort?
Take Action: Step out in obedience this week, even if it’s uncomfortable or costly.
Let’s Pray
Father God,
Thank You for sending Jesus to show us what true character looks like. Help us to follow His example of humility, obedience, and sacrifice. Give us the strength to choose Your will over our own, and transform us into men who reflect Christ in all we do. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
Brothers, Jesus gave everything to show us the way. Now it’s our turn to follow Him boldly. Step out, live courageously, and let His character shine through you. Let’s Get To Work!
