TOV 25-007 Reordering Priorities: Putting God First

TODAY'S FOCUS IS: Building a God-Centered Life That Changes Everything
6

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." —Matthew 6:33

Brothers, let’s talk priorities. Every day we’re bombarded with demands—our careers, our hobbies, even our families. It’s easy to feel like we’re juggling a dozen responsibilities, trying to keep them all in the air. But here’s the reality: if God isn’t first in your life, nothing else will ever truly be in order.

Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:33 aren’t just advice; they’re a command and a promise. When we seek God’s Kingdom first, everything else falls into place. But let’s be honest—it’s not always easy. The pressures of work, the pull of distractions, and even the good things like family can crowd out our focus on God. Today, we’re diving into how to reorder our priorities, put God at the center, and create a life that transforms not only us but everyone we’re called to lead.

The Cost of Misaligned Priorities

When God isn’t first, chaos often follows. Misaligned priorities lead to:

  1. Stress and Overwhelm
Trying to balance everything without God’s guidance leaves us feeling stretched too thin.

  2. Weakened Relationships
When we prioritize work or hobbies over family and faith, our relationships suffer.

  3. Spiritual Stagnation
Without intentional focus on God, our spiritual lives grow cold, and we drift further from His purpose.

Proverbs 19:21 reminds us: "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." The question is, are we aligning our plans with His purpose?

Why God Must Be First

When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. Here’s why:

1. God Provides Perspective

Seeking God first helps us see life’s demands through His eyes. We gain clarity on what truly matters.

2. God Brings Peace

When we trust God with our priorities, we experience the peace that comes from knowing He’s in control.

  • Isaiah 26:3: "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."

3. God Gives Purpose

When God is at the center, even mundane tasks become part of a greater purpose.

Steps to Reorder Your Priorities

Reordering priorities isn’t about abandoning responsibilities; it’s about letting God guide how we approach them. Here’s how to start:

1. Start with Surrender

Acknowledge that your current priorities might be out of order. Confess this to God and ask for His help to realign.

  • James 4:10: "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."

2. Establish a Daily Connection with God

Make time for prayer and Scripture the foundation of your day. When you seek God first in the morning, it sets the tone for everything else.

  • Psalm 5:3: "In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly."

3. Evaluate Your Commitments

Look at where your time, energy, and resources are going. Are they aligned with God’s Kingdom?

4. Create Boundaries

Protect time for God, your family, and rest. Say no to distractions that pull you away from these priorities.

5. Involve Your Family

Make God a shared priority. Pray together, worship together, and discuss how you can all put God first as a household.

The Transformational Impact of a God-First Life

When you put God first, everything changes:

  • As a Husband: You lead with humility and love, modeling Christ to your wife.

  • As a Father: You guide your children with wisdom, pointing them toward God’s purpose for their lives.

  • As a Leader: You inspire others to prioritize God, creating a ripple effect in your workplace and community.

Colossians 3:17 challenges us: "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Challenge of the Week

This week, take these steps to put God first:

  1. Start Each Day with God: Spend 10-15 minutes in prayer and Scripture before anything else.

  2. Reevaluate One Area of Your Life: Identify one commitment or habit that’s competing with your focus on God. Adjust or eliminate it.

  3. Involve Your Family: Lead your family in one God-centered activity this week, like a devotion, prayer time, or worship together.

Let’s Pray

Father God,
We come before You, acknowledging that we often let the busyness of life distract us from You. Forgive us for putting other things before You. Help us to reorder our priorities and seek You first in all we do. Give us wisdom to align our lives with Your Kingdom and courage to make the necessary changes. May our lives reflect Your love and truth, and may we lead our families and communities closer to You. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
