TOV 25-006 Heart Check: Identifying Divisions Within

TODAY'S FOCUS IS: Uncovering What Competes for Your Heart
4

"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other." —Matthew 6:24

Brother, let’s get real: what’s pulling your heart away from God today?

We live in a world full of distractions—success, comfort, possessions, status. These things aren’t inherently wrong, but when they start to compete with God for our devotion, they create subtle divisions in our hearts. And those divisions, left unchecked, can grow into walls that separate us from God’s purpose for our lives.

Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:24 make it clear: we can’t serve two masters. We’ll either love one and despise the other or be torn apart trying. A divided heart isn’t just a hindrance; it’s a danger. It weakens our faith, compromises our leadership, and leaves us vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes.

If you’ve felt that tension, if you’ve found yourself torn between God and the world, it’s time for a heart check. Let’s uncover those hidden loyalties and recommit to serving the only Master who truly deserves our devotion.

What Causes a Divided Heart?

A divided heart doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of gradual shifts in focus, small compromises, and misplaced priorities. Here are some common culprits:

1. The Pursuit of Success

Are you chasing career achievements or financial security at the expense of your relationship with God?

  • Matthew 16:26: "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"

2. The Desire for Approval

Are you more concerned with pleasing people than with obeying God?

  • Galatians 1:10: "Am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."

3. The Comfort Trap

Do you prioritize ease and convenience over stepping out in faith?

  • 2 Timothy 1:7: "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

How to Identify Divisions in Your Heart

Recognizing a divided heart requires honest self-reflection and a willingness to let the Holy Spirit reveal hidden loyalties.

1. Evaluate Your Priorities

Where do you spend your time, energy, and resources? Do they align with God’s purpose for your life?

2. Examine Your Reactions

What triggers anxiety, anger, or fear? Often, these emotions point to areas where we’ve placed too much trust in worldly things.

3. Listen to God’s Voice

Spend time in prayer and Scripture, asking God to show you areas of divided loyalty.

  • Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Restoring an Undivided Heart

Once you’ve identified the divisions, the next step is to take action. Here’s how to realign your heart with God:

1. Confess and Repent

Acknowledge the areas where you’ve allowed worldly desires to take priority over God.

  • 1 John 1:9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

2. Reorder Your Priorities

Make intentional changes to put God first in your life. This might mean cutting back on work hours, spending more time in prayer, or saying no to distractions.

3. Lean on God’s Strength

You don’t have to fight this battle alone. The Holy Spirit empowers you to live with an undivided heart.

  • Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through him who strengthens me."

Challenge of the Week

Take 30 minutes this week to perform a heart check. Write down your answers to these questions:

  1. What areas of my life are competing with my devotion to God?

  2. What changes do I need to make to realign my priorities?

  3. Who can I invite to hold me accountable in this process?

Let’s Pray

Father God,
We come before You, asking for clarity and conviction. Show us the areas of our hearts that are divided. Forgive us for allowing worldly desires to compete with our devotion to You. Strengthen us through Your Spirit to realign our lives with Your purpose. Help us to lead with integrity and to love You with all our hearts, minds, and souls. Guide us as we strive to live fully for You. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

Brothers, let’s not settle for divided lives. Let’s commit to being men of undivided devotion to God. Let’s Get To Work!
