How to Lead Someone to Christ: Practical Steps for Sharing the Gospel

Inspired by Tony Evans’ Teaching

As Christians, we are called to share the gospel, but how can we effectively lead someone to Christ in a practical, simple way? Sharing your faith might feel intimidating at first, but it’s much simpler when you have a clear plan. Drawing from Tony Evans’ insightful teaching, I’ll walk you through how to share the gospel, lead someone in the sinner’s prayer, and give them actionable steps for their first days as a new believer.

Step 1: Start with Connection and Care

Before sharing the gospel, begin by building a relationship. Show genuine interest in the person’s life. Listen to their story, empathize with their struggles, and let them know they are seen and loved.

As Tony Evans teaches, evangelism is about relationship, not just information. Jesus often started with compassion and understanding, meeting people where they were emotionally and spiritually.

Step 2: Share the Gospel in Simple Terms

The gospel is powerful because it’s simple. Share it in a way that resonates:

  1. The Problem: Sin“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Explain how sin separates us from God and creates a gap we can’t bridge on our own.

  2. The Solution: Jesus Christ“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son” (John 3:16). Share that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose again to offer eternal life.

  3. The Invitation: Faith“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Emphasize that salvation comes through faith in Jesus, not through good works.

Use your own words and personal testimony to make it relatable.

Step 3: Lead Them in the Sinner’s Prayer

If they’re ready to respond, invite them to pray the Sinner’s Prayer, which is a simple declaration of faith. Guide them gently through these words:

“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I believe You died for my sins and rose again to give me eternal life. I ask You to forgive me, come into my life, and be my Lord and Savior. I commit to following You from this day forward. Thank You for loving me and saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Reassure them that this prayer is about their heart and intention, not about saying the exact words.

Step 4: Celebrate and Encourage Them

Celebrate their decision to follow Christ! Let them know this is the most important decision they’ll ever make. Assure them of God’s love and forgiveness, reminding them that they are now part of God’s family (John 1:12).

Step 5: Give Them 5 Steps for the Next Few Days

Becoming a Christian is the beginning of a lifelong journey. Equip them with practical steps to grow in their new faith:

  1. Read the Bible Daily – Encourage them to start with the Gospel of John to learn more about Jesus’ life and teachings.

  2. Pray Regularly – Teach them to talk to God honestly about their thoughts, feelings, and questions.

  3. Connect with a Church – Help them find a Bible-believing church where they can grow, worship, and build community.

  4. Learn About Baptism – Explain that baptism is a public declaration of their faith and encourage them to talk to their church about taking this next step.

  5. Share Their Faith – Challenge them to tell a close friend or family member about their decision to follow Christ.

Check in with them during the next few days to encourage them and answer any questions they might have.

Final Thoughts

Leading someone to Christ isn’t about having all the answers or delivering a perfect presentation—it’s about being obedient, compassionate, and faithful. As Tony Evans reminds us, the Holy Spirit does the work; we’re just the messengers.

When you share the gospel, remember to lean on prayer, love, and Scripture. Trust God to work through you, and celebrate the incredible privilege of being part of someone’s journey to salvation.

Let’s get to work, Warriors!
