Beloved in Christ,
My name is Simon, once known merely as one of the brothers of Jesus, a man whose life was forever altered by the works and words of the Messiah. My story is one of transformation, from the shadows of skepticism to the light of belief.
In the small town of Nazareth, I grew up in a family known for its simplicity and piety. Mary, our mother, always had a depth of faith and a serenity that puzzled us as children. Joseph, a man of quiet strength, instilled in us the values of hard work and adherence to our Jewish traditions. “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph (Joses), Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” (Mark 6:3, NIV)
Jesus, my brother, was always distinct. As a child, I observed in Him an uncommon wisdom and a connection to the divine that was both inspiring and, at times, bewildering. When He began His public ministry, proclaiming the coming of God’s kingdom with authority and performing signs and wonders, I was torn between the brother I knew and the prophet He claimed to be.
Initially, I struggled with His teachings and claims. Could the brother with whom I had shared a home truly be the promised Messiah, the hope of Israel? This internal conflict was a barrier that kept me from fully embracing His mission. It wasn’t until after His crucifixion, a time of unspeakable grief and confusion, and His subsequent resurrection, that my eyes were fully opened to the truth of His divine nature.
The resurrection transformed my doubt into faith and my confusion into clarity. The brother I had grown up with was indeed the Savior of the world. This revelation was both humbling and exhilarating. “For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.” (2 Corinthians 4:5, ESV)
In the days following Jesus' ascension, I, along with my siblings, joined the burgeoning group of believers in Jerusalem. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was a pivotal moment for me, as it was for the entire early Church. “All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.” (Acts 1:14, ESV)
As a follower of The Way, my life took on a new purpose. I witnessed the growth of the Church, the spread of the Gospel, and the transformative power of Christ’s love and redemption in the lives of countless individuals. The brother I once knew in the flesh, I now proclaimed as the risen Lord and King.
To you, fellow believers, I offer my story as an encouragement. Faith is often a journey filled with questions and doubts. It is through seeking, experiencing, and sometimes wrestling with these doubts that our faith is strengthened and deepened.
May you be emboldened by my testimony to embrace your journey of faith with honesty and openness. Remember, the same Jesus who transformed my life is alive and active today, ready to reveal Himself to all who earnestly seek Him.
In His service and love,
Simon, brother of Jesus and servant of the risen Christ.
