Location: The Wilderness, Israel
Time: Circa 1500 B.C.
Primary Scripture: Exodus 33:11 — "The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend."
Moses sits outside the tent of meeting, his face marked by lines of wisdom, leadership, and the heavy responsibility he bears for leading God’s people. In a rare moment of rest, he gathers a small group of elders around him, the quiet of the desert night lending solemnity to his words.
My Name Is Moses…
There is something I wish to share with you tonight, something few understand. It is about God, our Almighty Creator, our Deliverer, our Lawgiver. But tonight, I do not speak of Him in those ways. Tonight, I wish to speak of Him as my Friend.
Some say that when they think of God, they see His power, His justice, His commands. They think of the mountain quaking, the thunder and fire as He spoke to us. They remember the plagues in Egypt and the parting of the sea. All of this is true, for He is indeed powerful and just. But there is more to God than power and justice. I have come to know Him as a friend.
Do you know what it is to be a friend of God? This is no small matter, I assure you. For God, the One who created heaven and earth, chooses not only to speak to us but to walk with us, to remain with us even when we falter. I have come to know Him this way, face to face, as one friend speaks to another (Exodus 33:11). He is both the God who commands and the God who listens, who shares His heart with us, who is faithful beyond measure.
