To the faithful in every age,
I am Haggai, a servant and prophet of the Lord, called to speak during a critical moment in our history – the year 520 BC. This was a time when the returned exiles from Babylon found themselves in a land both familiar and foreign, struggling to rebuild not only the Temple of our God but their identity as His chosen people.
The work on the Lord’s Temple in Jerusalem had been stalled, languishing amidst the ruins, while the people prioritized their own homes and comfort. Seeing this, the Lord stirred my spirit to challenge and encourage His people. “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” (Haggai 1:4, NIV)
My messages were short but urgent, calling the people to consider their ways, to reflect on their hardships, and to recognize that their neglect of the Temple was at the heart of their struggles. “Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little.” (Haggai 1:5-6, NIV)
The Lord, through me, assured the people of His presence and His commitment to the covenant made with our ancestors. As they responded to this call and began the work, I proclaimed the Lord’s message: “Be strong, all you people of the land,” declares the Lord, “and work. For I am with you,” declares the Lord Almighty.” (Haggai 2:4, NIV)
In a time of uncertainty, with the memory of the former Temple’s glory still vivid in the minds of the older generation, the Lord used me to speak hope and promise into the hearts of the builders. “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,” says the Lord Almighty. “And in this place I will grant peace,” declares the Lord Almighty. (Haggai 2:9, NIV)
My ministry, though brief, was marked by a singular focus – to awaken the people to God’s call and to urge them to act on it. I saw firsthand how easily God’s people can become distracted, consumed by their own needs and forgetting the greater purpose for which they were chosen.
To you, believers who seek to follow the Lord in your generation, let my words resonate in your hearts. The call to build God’s kingdom is as urgent now as it was in my day. In every age, God seeks those who will put His work first, trusting in His provision and guidance.
Consider your ways. Are you investing your time, resources, and talents in pursuits that further God’s kingdom, or have you, like the people of my time, become preoccupied with your own concerns? Remember, the God we serve is not only interested in the work of our hands but the condition of our hearts.
May you find encouragement and strength in the knowledge that the Lord Almighty is with you as you engage in His work. May your efforts contribute to a legacy of faithfulness and obedience, reflecting the glory of God in your time as the Temple did in mine.
In the service of the Eternal King,
Haggai, the Lord’s Messenger.
