Lydia Speaks: Who Is God?

Meeting the God Who Changes Everything

Location: Philippi
Time: Circa 50 A.D.
Primary Scriptures: Acts 16:11-40 — Lydia’s conversion and the impact of Paul’s ministry in Philippi.

Lydia, a merchant of purple cloth and a recent follower of Jesus, stands in her home in Philippi, speaking to a gathering of friends and family. Her voice is filled with passion and conviction as she recounts her journey to faith and her understanding of the one true God.

Lydia:

I am Lydia, a seller of purple cloth, a woman who once thought she knew what gods were. Philippi, this bustling Roman colony, is filled with shrines and altars. The gods of Rome, Greece, and the East are everywhere—gods of war, wealth, fertility, and wisdom. They demand offerings, rituals, and sacrifices. They promise much but deliver little. They are made of stone and gold, crafted by human hands, powerless to truly change a life.

But then, one day by the river, I met men who spoke of a God unlike any I had ever heard of before. I was there for prayer, a seeker of truth among the worshippers of the God of Israel. And as we gathered, Paul and his companions joined us. When Paul began to speak, his words pierced my heart. He spoke of a living God, the Creator of heaven and earth, who is not bound by temples or statues, who is not served by human hands as if He needed anything (Acts 17:24-25). This God—my God—created everything that is, out of nothing.
