Dear Faithful in Christ,
As I pen this letter, the sun rises over the sprawling encampment of Israel, casting its light upon a people on the brink of a monumental transition. I am Joshua, son of Nun, chosen by God to lead His people into the Promised Land, a role I inherited from Moses, my mentor and leader. My heart is heavy with the weight of responsibility, yet buoyed by the unshakeable faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The Lord has spoken to me, affirming His promise and instructing me to prepare the people to cross the Jordan River. The land of Canaan, promised to our forefathers, lies before us, a testament to God's faithfulness and a challenge to our obedience and courage. The task is daunting, but the Lord's command is clear: "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go" (Joshua 1:7).
I remember vividly the day Moses sent me, alongside Caleb and ten others, to spy out the land of Canaan. Our report was a mix of awe at the land's bounty and concern over the formidable inhabitants. Yet, in God's strength, we knew victory was possible. Now, as leader, I stand on the threshold of fulfilling that promise, with a people tempered by decades in the wilderness, their faith and resolve forged in the crucible of God's providence.
The crossing of the Jordan River marks not just a physical journey but a spiritual passage. As the Ark of the Covenant leads the way, the waters part, reminiscent of the Red Sea crossing, a powerful symbol of God's continued presence and power. We stand as witnesses to a God who parts waters, who makes ways in the wilderness, and who remains faithful to His promises.
Jericho, with its daunting walls, is our first challenge in the land. The battle plan, as revealed by the Lord, defies conventional strategies. We are to march around the city, with the Ark and the priests leading, for six days, and on the seventh day, to shout in unison as the walls come tumbling down. It is a plan that requires absolute faith and obedience, qualities that define our relationship with our God.
As we take possession of the land, I am constantly reminded of the need to remain steadfast in our commitment to the Lord. The sin of Achan, taking plunder from Jericho against God's command, brings a stark reminder that our victories are contingent upon our obedience. It is a lesson that resonates through the ages, a call to align our desires and actions with God's will.
I am now an old man, having witnessed the faithfulness of God in leading His people to a land flowing with milk and honey. Yet, I am acutely aware of the fragility of human commitment. I urge the Israelites to choose whom they will serve, whether the gods of their ancestors or the Lord. As for me and my household, we choose to serve the Lord.
My journey, from the slave pits of Egypt to the hills of Canaan, is a testament to God's enduring faithfulness and power. I urge you, followers of Christ, to draw inspiration from our story. Be strong and courageous in your faith journey, not swayed by the transient allure of this world but anchored in the eternal promises of God.
As you navigate the challenges and opportunities of your time, hold fast to the teachings of Christ, who fulfills the Law and the Prophets. In Him, you find the ultimate expression of God's love and faithfulness. Let the story of Israel's journey from bondage to freedom, from wilderness to promise, be a beacon that guides your path.
In closing, I leave you with this exhortation: be vigilant in your faith, unwavering in your obedience, and abundant in your love for the Lord. For in Him, you will find your strength, your purpose, and your ultimate victory.
In Faith and Obedience,
Joshua, Son of Nun
