A Letter from John Mark

Dear Followers of Jesus Christ
2

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

As I sit to pen this letter to you, my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, I am filled with gratitude for the journey we share and the bond we hold in our Savior. My name is John Mark, though you might know me simply as Mark, the author of the Gospel bearing my name. I want to share with you a glimpse into my life, my experiences, and the incredible grace of God that has shaped my path.

From an early age, I was blessed with a family deeply rooted in the faith. My mother, Mary, owned a large house in Jerusalem where many of the early Christians gathered for prayer and fellowship. It was in this house that the Apostle Peter came after being miraculously released from prison. I remember the excitement and awe we felt when Rhoda, our servant, recognized Peter’s voice at the door. The memory of Peter’s arrival, his recounting of the angelic deliverance, and the fervent prayers of the believers are etched in my heart. Our home was a haven for the early Church, a place of refuge and spiritual nourishment.

Being raised in such an environment, I was privileged to witness the faith and courage of the apostles and early Christians. It was also through these connections that I became closely associated with my cousin Barnabas, a man of great encouragement and faith. Barnabas, whose name means “son of encouragement,” played a significant role in the early Church and in my own spiritual development.

When the Holy Spirit set apart Barnabas and Paul for their missionary work, I was given the opportunity to join them on their First Missionary Journey. However, as you may know, I did not complete the journey. Fear and uncertainty overtook me, and I returned to Jerusalem. This decision caused a rift between Paul and Barnabas, leading to their separation on subsequent missions. I regretted my decision deeply and felt the weight of my failure.

Yet, God’s grace is abundant and His plans perfect. Despite my initial shortcomings, the Lord continued to work in my life. Barnabas, true to his name, did not give up on me. He took me under his wing, mentoring and encouraging me to grow in faith and service. Through his guidance, I matured in my walk with Christ and learned the importance of perseverance and commitment.

Years later, by God’s providence, I was reconciled with Paul. In his letter to the Colossians, Paul mentions me, instructing them to welcome me if I came to them. This reconciliation was a testament to the transformative power of God’s grace and forgiveness. Paul saw in me a fellow worker for the Kingdom, and our relationship was restored.

One of the most profound tasks the Lord entrusted to me was writing the Gospel of Mark. Although I was not one of the original apostles, I had the privilege of closely associating with Peter, who shared with me his firsthand accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry. My Gospel, often regarded as Peter’s account, was written to convey the Good News of Jesus Christ to all who would read it. Through it, I aimed to share the urgency and immediacy of Jesus’ message, His miraculous works, His teachings, and ultimately, His sacrifice and resurrection.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the incredible grace and mercy the Lord extends to each of us. Despite our failures and weaknesses, He calls us, equips us, and uses us for His glory. My life is a testament to the truth that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. As Paul wrote, “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).

Dear friends, I encourage you to hold fast to your faith, to seek forgiveness and reconciliation where there is division, and to trust in God’s perfect plan for your life. We are all part of His grand story, each with a unique role to play. Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to Christ, knowing that His love and grace will guide us through every trial and triumph.

May the peace of Christ be with you all. Continue to love one another deeply, serve with humility, and proclaim the Gospel with boldness. Together, let us advance His Kingdom and bring glory to His name.

In Christ’s love and service,

John Mark
