TOV 25-028 The Trap of Pride: When Self Comes First

TODAY'S FOCUS IS: Recognizing and Overcoming the Subtle Grip of Pride

Let me ask you something: have you ever stood tall in your accomplishments only to realize later you were standing alone? Pride has a way of fooling us like that, whispering lies of self-sufficiency and masking our deep need for God. It’s the oldest trap in the book—literally. And it’s one men like us fall into far too easily.

Our springboard for today’s discussion is Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride blinds us to our need for God, convincing us that our strength is enough, our wisdom is sufficient, and our plans are flawless. But pride isn’t just about arrogance—it’s about misplaced trust. When we put self at the center, God is pushed to the edges.

Pride creeps in through subtle ways: a refusal to ask for help, the need to always be right, or the silent belief that you don’t need God’s guidance today. Left unchecked, it hardens your heart, leaving you vulnerable to failure and, worse, isolation from God and others.

The antidote? Humility. True humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself—it means thinking of yourself less. It’s anchoring your life in the reality that you are completely dependent on God. Cultivating humility starts with honest self-reflection, intentional submission to God in prayer, and opening yourself to accountability with other godly men.

Warrior, hear me out: pride is a battle we all face, but it’s one we can win by walking hand in hand with our Creator. When we step aside and let God take the lead, we find a strength greater than our own and a purpose far beyond what pride can offer.

Let’s Pray:
Lord, strip away the pride that blinds me and keeps me from You. Teach me to lean not on my own understanding but to trust You fully. May my life reflect Your humility and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Let’s get to work.
