Martin Luther said the church stands or falls on a correct understanding and faith in, how we can be right with God - Justification.
Like you said, it is a fundamental doctrine that when embraced imparts freedom.
And yet many are either caught up in the bondage of religion or see themselves as righteous before God without the need for salvation.
On the flip side, when grace is abused/cheapened, antinomianism kicks in and there are no laws whatsoever which is license to sin.
