Beloved in Christ,
I am James, son of Zebedee, often known as James the Greater, to distinguish me from another apostle of the same name. As I recount the story of my life and ministry, I write with a heart full of gratitude for the privilege of being a close disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ and a witness to His divine glory.
My journey began by the Sea of Galilee, where I worked as a fisherman alongside my father Zebedee and my brother John. Our family was blessed with some means, but it was the call of Jesus that truly enriched our lives. “And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.” (Mark 1:20, ESV)
Being called to follow Christ was the greatest honor of my life. Alongside Peter and John, I was part of Jesus' inner circle, privileged to witness events that others did not. I was there on the Mount of Transfiguration, where Jesus' divine nature was revealed in dazzling glory. “And his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.” (Mark 9:3, ESV)
My time with Jesus was a period of learning, growth, and, at times, rebuke. My brother and I, nicknamed “Sons of Thunder” by Jesus, were zealous and passionate, sometimes overly so. Our request to sit at Jesus' right and left in His glory revealed our lack of understanding of His kingdom. In response, Jesus taught us about true greatness in His kingdom: “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.” (Mark 10:43-44, ESV)
After Jesus’ crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, I, alongside the other apostles, received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This transformative experience propelled us to fearlessly proclaim the Gospel, despite opposition and persecution.
My earthly journey ended under Herod Agrippa, who had me executed by the sword. This event, recorded in the Book of Acts, marked me as the first apostle to be martyred for the faith. “About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword.” (Acts 12:1-2, ESV)
Though my life was cut short, the seeds of faith I helped sow continued to grow and flourish. My martyrdom, I hope, serves as a testament to the cost and the glory of following Christ. The road to discipleship is not one of comfort and earthly rewards but of sacrifice, service, and eternal hope.
To you, faithful believers, I share my story to encourage you in your walk with Christ. Embrace the journey with perseverance and joy, knowing that the trials of this world are but a prelude to the glory that awaits in Christ. Be bold in your witness, steadfast in your faith, and humble in service.
Remember, our time on earth is fleeting, but the impact of a life lived for Christ is eternal. May you find strength in His promise, comfort in His presence, and unshakable hope in His resurrection.
In the grace and peace of our Savior,
James, Son of Zebedee, Apostle and Martyr.
