My Name Is Balaam...
A prophet known for my interaction with a king named Balak and my unique encounter with a talking donkey.
Dear Fellow Believers,
My name is Balaam, a prophet known for my interaction with a king named Balak and my unique encounter with a talking donkey, as chronicled in the Book of Numbers. My story serves as a crucial lesson about obedience to God and the dangers of being swayed by earthly riches and desires. I hope my life's account encourages you to listen to God’s voice, heed His warnings, and remain devoted to His will in all circumstances.
I was a prophet who had a relationship with God, and my reputation had spread across the land. Balak, the king of Moab, fearful of the growing Israelite nation, called upon me to curse the Israelites. Even though God had made it clear that the Israelites were His blessed people, I was tempted by the king's offer of wealth and honor, and I agreed to go with Balak's messengers.
As I set off on my journey, my path was blocked three times by an angel of the Lord, which I, in my spiritual blindness, could not see. However, my donkey could see the angel and refused to move forward, saving me from the angel's sword. In a miraculous turn of events, God gave the donkey the ability to speak, rebuking me for my cruel treatment. Then my eyes were opened, and I saw the angel of the Lord standing in our path.
Chastened, I offered to turn back, but the angel instructed me to proceed, warning me to speak only the words God would give me. Upon meeting Balak, I found myself unable to curse the Israelites. Instead, I pronounced blessings upon them, much to Balak's disappointment and anger. But I could only speak the words the Lord had put in my mouth, for God's blessings cannot be reversed by human will.
Regrettably, my story did not end on this note of obedience. Later, I suggested a way for the Moabite women to lead the Israelites into sin, causing them to turn away from God, which led to a severe plague among the Israelites. This act of defiance against God led to my death during an Israelite attack on the Midianites.
My story serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of disobedience and greed. Even though I had the privilege to speak with God, my desires led me astray. I urge you, dear believers, to remain obedient to God's commands, to resist the allure of earthly riches and honor, and to stand firm in the face of temptation.
May you always stay true to the Lord's will and purpose for your life, valuing His wisdom and guidance above all else. Let my life story serve as a warning and an encouragement to you on your spiritual journey.
In humility and regret,
Balaam
