To the Faithful of Judah,
I am Ahaz, son of Jotham, the unyielding ruler of Judah for sixteen years. As you sit with this letter, I implore you to understand it not as a plea for forgiveness but as a testament to a king’s choices, made with eyes wide open and no regrets.
From the start of my reign at the age of twenty, I walked a path starkly different from my forefathers. “Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God, as his father David had done” (2 Kings 16:2). I chose power, alliance, and strategy over traditions and prophecies. Some of you hailed me as a pragmatist; others condemned me as an apostate. But remember, every choice I made, I made for the might of Judah.
