Date: Monday, December 3, 26 A.D. (Year of the Consulship of Lentulus and Agrippa, 778 Ab urbe condita)
Today was the first step in a decision I knew would weigh heavily on me, and yet, I had no choice. Jonah’s sister, though young and innocent, is not safe with us any longer. I’ve made the arrangements to take her to my mother’s house, away from the dangers of the road and the looming chaos that seems to be inching ever closer to Jerusalem. Jonah, reluctant as he was, finally agreed, though I can still see the worry etched across his face. He trusts me, but he fears for his sister—and for good reason. The road ahead is perilous.
We set off before dawn, traveling light and in disguise. I decided we’d blend in as locals, common travelers making our way to a nearby village. I left my armor behind, opting instead for a rough tunic a cloak, just like Jonah and his sister. I’ve spent years as a centurion, always out in the open, always in command, so to go undercover like this was uncomfortable, but necessary. The fewer eyes on us, the better.
