It’s strange returning to my mother’s house again, especially under these circumstances. The last time I was here, just over a month ago, I had come for a brief reprieve from the chaos of Jerusalem—a momentary escape from my duties and responsibilities. That time, it had been different. I was a soldier on a short break, resting in the familiar comforts of my childhood home, catching up with my mother, and trying to forget the weight of Roman rule and rebellion.
But this time, the weight of what I carry is far heavier.
We arrived late this afternoon, dressed in the simple garb of locals, hoping to keep a low profile. The road had been long and dangerous, but somehow, we made it without further incident after that attack last week. My arm still ached from the wound I’d received during the skirmish, but I didn’t bring it up it again to Jonah or Leah. They had been through enough.
