Capernaum was different from the other towns we had passed through. It was larger, busier, its streets filled with merchants shouting prices for fresh fish, grains, and pottery. The sea air carried the sharp scent of salt and damp wood, mingling with the smokiness of street-side fire pits where vendors roasted their daily catch.
It was the kind of place that made it easy to blend in—a city accustomed to travelers, traders, and Romans.
Jonah and I arrived midmorning, our journey from Cana long and tiring. The last few days had been spent following leads, only to find that Jesus had moved yet again. The whispers had all pointed here, to this town by the sea, but I had learned not to trust whispers.
