I’ve had a lot to think about lately. It’s as though everything I’ve been trained to do, every duty I’ve performed as a centurion, has been thrown into chaos. The events surrounding Jesus of Nazareth are weighing heavily on me. This is no longer just another assignment to be completed; this investigation has to take priority. I can feel it in my bones. Something about this situation—this man, these whispers about the Messiah—is different. Rome may not understand it yet, but the people of Judea certainly do. And I’d be a fool to ignore it any longer.
Over the past few weeks, the demands on my time have been overwhelming. I’m still overseeing the usual duties of maintaining order and enforcing Roman law, keeping the peace, and quelling any signs of rebellion. The weight of my responsibilities has always been heavy, but now, with this growing unrest, it feels unbearable. Each day, I’m pulled in so many directions, managing local disputes, keeping my soldiers in line, and ensuring that Varro remains satisfied with the status quo.
