If We Do Not Practice Listening for God's Voice, How Will We Know the Difference Between God and Satan?
The battle between the voice of God and the deception of Satan is real, intense, and ongoing.
In a world filled with endless distractions, recognizing the distinct voice of God can be challenging. It becomes even more critical to distinguish God's guidance from the deceitful whispers of Satan. Scripture is rife with examples of the importance of being able to discern between the two. If we do not intentionally practice listening to God's voice, we run the risk of being led astray by deceit.
Scripture Tells Us
John 10:27: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." The ability to recognize and follow God's voice is equated with belonging to Him. In the same chapter, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who protects His sheep from thieves and robbers. Satan, on the other hand, is described as a thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
James 4:7: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Submitting to God means actively seeking His will and His voice in our lives. The more we know God's voice, the easier it becomes to resist Satan's temptations.
1 John 4:1: "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." This passage reminds us of the importance of discernment. To effectively test the spirits, we need to be intimately familiar with God's voice and His word.
Three Consequences of Not Listening to God's Voice
Vulnerability to Deception: Without recognizing God's voice, we become susceptible to falsehood. Satan is known as the father of lies (John 8:44). Without the truth of God's voice to guide us, we can easily be misled.
Missed Blessings and Opportunities: God often guides us towards blessings, opportunities, and growth. By not listening or recognizing His voice, we may miss out on what He has prepared for us.
Stagnant Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth is a journey of deepening our relationship with God. Listening to and obeying God's voice is fundamental to that growth. Ignoring or failing to discern His voice can lead to spiritual stagnation.
Conclusion
The battle between the voice of God and the deception of Satan is real, intense, and ongoing. To effectively navigate through life's challenges and avoid falling prey to deception, believers must make it a priority to intimately know God's voice. This discernment is not only for our benefit but also ensures that we are aligned with God's plans, purposes, and blessings for our lives.
