Gearing Up for Battle: Becoming God's Man at Work
TODAY’S FOCUS IS: Serving, Leading, and Loving in the Trenches
“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” —Colossians 3:9-10 (ESV)
Warriors, let’s get something straight.
Work isn’t just about punching a clock, climbing ladders, or checking off tasks. Work is one of your fiercest battlegrounds for Christ.
It’s not just about the customers you serve or the products you push out the door. It’s about the people right next to you—your boss, your employees, your rivals, your difficult coworkers—the ones you want to avoid and the ones you enjoy. Every single one of them was designed by the same Creator who handcrafted you. Every single one of them was deemed so valuable that Christ died for them too.
That means how you treat them—especially at work—matters to God.
Your Mission Field Is Closer Than You Think
Look around you, brother. The mission field isn’t just some faraway land or some someday goal. It’s right where your boots are planted today—at your desk, in the factory, on the construction site, in meetings, in the chaos and grind of everyday business.
And God’s command is clear:
“And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” —Matthew 22:37-39 (ESV)
Your coworkers are your neighbors. Every. Single. One.
The ones who frustrate you.
The ones who backstab.
The ones who are lost and broken.
The ones who challenge you to rise higher.
All of them.
You don't get to pick and choose. You were placed there, in that office, in that truck, in that team, by divine assignment.
How Do We Lead Like Christ at Work?
It’s not with a Bible thumped under our arm while shouting down the hallways.
It’s not with a self-righteous attitude that says, “I’m better than you.”
It’s not with fake smiles and passive politeness.
It’s with action. Real action. Gritty, powerful action.
“Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” —1 John 3:18 (ESV)
It’s when you serve without expecting a thank you.
It’s when you forgive quickly, even when it hurts.
It’s when you do the right thing, even if no one notices or rewards you.
It's when you decide that your conduct will reflect the King you serve—not the culture you live in.
You and I are called to put on the right gear before stepping into the workplace battlefield each day:
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” —Colossians 3:12-14 (ESV)
This isn’t optional gear, brother.
It’s mandatory. It’s mission-critical.
Okay, So What Do We Do?
1. Suit Up Every Morning
Before you open your laptop, swing a hammer, or clock in—pray.
Ask God: “Father, clothe me today in compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and love. Make me Your man where You’ve placed me.”
2. Choose the Harder Path
It’s easy to avoid the difficult people at work.
It’s easy to gossip, grumble, and undermine.
It’s easy to live like the world.
But you’re not built for easy.
You’re built for excellence. For war. For God's glory.
This week, identify one person—the hardest one—and go out of your way to serve them.
Help them. Encourage them. Pray for them.
3. Lead By Example
Leadership at work isn’t just for the guy with the corner office or the biggest paycheck.
True leadership is earned through integrity, courage, and sacrifice.
When others see how you work, how you treat people, how you refuse to compromise—they’ll see Christ.
Challenge of the Week
Pick the person at work who’s hardest to love.
Serve them.
Encourage them.
Pray for them daily.
Ask God to give you His eyes for them—and then act accordingly.
Let’s Pray
Father, strengthen me to see my workplace as a battleground for Your glory. Clothe me in compassion, patience, and love. Help me to serve those around me with the same sacrificial love You’ve poured out for me. Help me lead with humility, forgive quickly, and work heartily as for You, not for men. Let my life at work reflect the power of the Gospel. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
