My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In the quiet village of Bethany, nestled on the outskirts of Jerusalem, my story unfolded—a narrative interwoven with the miraculous signs of Jesus, the Messiah. I am Lazarus, and through the words of my friend, the Apostle John, my resurrection stands as the seventh sign, a testament to the power and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is my profound honor to share with you not just my story, but the essence of John's Gospel, written that you might believe and find life eternal in His name (John 20:30-31).
The turning of water into wine at Cana marked the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, revealing His glory and His dominion over the natural world (John 2:1-11). This first sign, witnessed by many, including myself, demonstrated that the new covenant He brought would surpass the old, filling our lives with the richness of His grace.
In Capernaum, a royal official's desperate plea for his dying son became the canvas for Jesus' second sign. With words spoken from a distance, Jesus healed the boy, illustrating His authority over life and death, and the power of faith that transcends physical presence (John 4:46-54).
The Pool of Bethesda was the setting for the third sign, where Jesus healed a man paralyzed for thirty-eight years (John 5:1-9). This miracle, performed on the Sabbath, challenged legalistic interpretations of God's law, emphasizing mercy and compassion over rigid observance.
Feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, Jesus showcased His provision and care for His followers, signifying Himself as the true Bread of Life, sustaining us in every circumstance (John 6:1-14).
Walking on water, the fifth sign, Jesus demonstrated His mastery over the created world, inviting us to trust Him even amidst the storms of life (John 6:16-21).
The healing of the man born blind, the sixth sign, was a profound declaration that Jesus is the light of the world, opening our spiritual eyes to see the truth and beauty of His kingdom (John 9:1-7).
And then, there was me, Lazarus, dead for four days, bound in grave clothes, lying in a dark tomb. Jesus' command, "Lazarus, come out!" pierced the silence of death, and I emerged, a living testimony to Jesus' victory over death, foreshadowing His own resurrection and the hope it brings to all who believe (John 11:1-44).
My dear friends, each of these signs, culminating in my own resurrection, serves a singular purpose: to reveal Jesus' identity as the Son of God and to invite us into a life-transforming belief in Him. John's Gospel invites us into a journey of faith, encouraging us to see beyond the physical manifestations of Jesus' power to the deeper spiritual truths they signify: Jesus is the source of life, the light in our darkness, and the path to eternal fellowship with the Father.
As one who has walked from death back into life, I implore you to consider the weight of these signs. Let them fortify your faith and draw you closer to Jesus, who loves us with an everlasting love. In Him, we find not only a savior but a friend, a redeemer who calls us out of our own tombs of despair and into His marvelous light.
May the testimony of my life and the words of John's Gospel inspire you to deeper faith and greater devotion. Believe in Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing, may you have life in His name.
With love and gratitude for the gift of new life,
Lazarus of Bethany
