Beyond the Rules: Pursuing a Real Relationship with God
TODAY’S FOCUS IS: Breaking Free from Religious Formulas and Walking in True Faith
"Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track." —Proverbs 3:6 (MSG)
Faith Isn’t a Checklist
We men like clarity. We like systems, formulas, and step-by-step guides.
That’s why we naturally try to turn faith into a list of rules and routines.
✔ Read the Bible for 20 minutes.
✔ Pray every morning.
✔ Go to church every Sunday.
✔ Tithe exactly 10%.
✔ Do this, don’t do that.
We believe that if we check all the right boxes, we’ll automatically grow closer to God.
But here’s the hard truth:
🚨 A checklist can never replace a real relationship.
Faith isn’t about following a rulebook. It’s about following a living, breathing, speaking God.
Formulas Can’t Contain God
Let’s be clear: spiritual disciplines are good.
📖 Reading the Bible is powerful.
🙏 Prayer is essential.
🏛 Being part of a church is necessary.
But when we turn these disciplines into rigid formulas, we miss something critical—
A relationship with God is dynamic, not mechanical.
You can’t fit God into a one-size-fits-all approach.
Look at the Bible.
Moses encountered God in the wilderness through a burning bush.
David met Him in the solitude of fields and caves.
Elijah heard Him in a whisper.
Paul had a radical encounter on the road to Damascus.
Each story was different—because God moves in unique ways with each of His people.
Faith is Meant to Grow and Change
While God never changes (James 1:17), our relationship with Him should constantly be growing.
📌 If we are in the same place spiritually today as we were five years ago, something is wrong.
The danger of formulas is that they make us stagnant.
We rely on rituals instead of real encounters.
We seek certainty instead of intimacy.
We cling to what worked in the past rather than seeking God in the present.
What Do We Do?
1. Stop Treating Spiritual Growth Like a To-Do List
Take an honest look at your spiritual habits.
Ask yourself:
✔ Am I just going through the motions?
✔ Do I actually expect to meet God—or just check a box?
✔ Am I open to God leading me into new experiences with Him?
If your faith feels routine and lifeless, it’s time to shake things up.
2. Seek God Beyond Your Comfort Zone
Where has God met you in the past?
✔ Was it through deep Bible study?
✔ Was it through serving the poor?
✔ Was it in solitude and silence?
✔ Was it in worship and song?
Now, ask the Holy Spirit, “Where do You want me next?”
God is always leading us into deeper places.
Be willing to follow Him—even if it looks different than what you’re used to.
3. Move from Rules to Relationship
Jesus never told His disciples to follow a set of rules—He simply said, “Follow Me.”
👣 He wants us to walk with Him, listen to Him, trust Him daily.
📖 Instead of reading the Bible mechanically, read it to hear God speak.
🙏 Instead of praying out of duty, talk to God as your Father.
🤝 Instead of attending church to check a box, engage in real fellowship.
When we shift from obligation to relationship, our faith becomes alive again.
Challenge of the Week
✅ Ask God to shake up your routine.
✅ Try seeking Him in a new way—worship, fasting, serving, solitude, or something else.
✅ Commit to listening for His voice in everything you do.
Let’s Pray
Father,
We confess that we’ve tried to fit You into our own formulas. We’ve made faith about rules instead of a real relationship. Today, we ask You to break through our routines and lead us into something deeper. Open our eyes to where You are speaking. Draw us into fresh encounters with You. We don’t want a checklist faith—we want You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
God isn’t calling you to just follow rules.
He’s calling you into a living, dynamic relationship.
Step out. Seek Him. Expect more.
Let’s Get to Work!
Thank you!
