Dear Followers of Christ,
I am Caleb, of the tribe of Judah, writing to you from a place and time far removed from your own. Yet, the lessons of my life's journey, chronicled in the book of Numbers, are as relevant to you today as they were to my people millennia ago. My story is one of faith, courage, and unwavering obedience to God's will.
You may know me primarily as one of the twelve spies sent to explore Canaan, the land promised by God to our forefathers. While the journey we embarked upon was fraught with uncertainty, I stood firm in my conviction that God would deliver on His promises. Unlike ten of my fellow spies, who succumbed to fear and doubt, Joshua and I held fast to faith. We believed that, with God on our side, even the mightiest of foes and the most fortified cities were as nothing.
The consequences of the disbelief shown by my peers were dire – a forty-year sojourn in the wilderness, during which an entire generation perished, never to see the Promised Land. But God, in His mercy, spared Joshua and me. We were the only two from our original group who were destined to enter Canaan.
In these narratives, there is a profound lesson about trust and obedience. God’s plans are often beyond our understanding, and His ways are higher than ours. When He commands, it is not for us to question with human reasoning but to obey with faith. Disobedience and lack of trust can lead to spiritual wilderness, a state of aimlessness and wandering far from God’s best for us.
As you traverse your own spiritual journey, remember the significance of trust and obedience. God’s commandments, His guidance through the Holy Scriptures, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, are your North Star. They are your assurance in times of uncertainty, your strength in moments of weakness.
I was over eighty-five when I finally entered Canaan. Despite my advanced age, my strength had not diminished, nor had my zeal for the Lord’s work. I claimed the hill country of Hebron, as God promised me, and drove out the Anakites residing there. It was a testament to God’s faithfulness and a fulfillment of His promise. Age, circumstances, or the seeming impossibility of a situation are not hindrances to God’s plans being realized in your life.
Moreover, my story is a testament to the fact that God’s promises are sure. His timing may not align with ours, but His word never returns void. In your walk with Christ, be patient and steadfast. Stand firm in your faith, even when the fulfillment of His promises seems delayed. In due time, He will bring to fruition what He has spoken over your life.
Reflect on the story of the spies, not just as a historical account, but as a mirror to your own life. Are there areas where you have let fear override faith? Are there God-given promises that you have doubted? Let my story encourage you to renew your trust in the Lord.
To the elders and leaders among you, lead with a spirit of faith and courage. Be like Joshua and me, who, despite the popular opinion of the day, chose to stand on God’s promises. Your faith can inspire and lead a whole generation into their God-ordained destiny.
Lastly, remember that your journey with God is not just about reaching a destination. It’s about becoming more like Christ, developing faith that can move mountains, and cultivating a heart that seeks to please God in all things. As you navigate the challenges and victories of your faith journey, may you do so with the assurance that God is with you, guiding, strengthening, and fulfilling His purpose in your life.
In the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Caleb, Son of Jephunneh
