Dear Followers of Jesus Christ,
I write to you from a place of profound humility and awe at the mysterious ways of God. My name is Rahab, once known as a harlot of Jericho, now a testament to God's boundless grace and mercy. My story is one of transformation, a journey from the margins to the heart of God's redemptive plan. It's a tale that intertwines with the lineage of King David and, ultimately, with the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
My life in Jericho was marked by survival in a profession scorned and marginalized. As a prostitute, I lived on the fringes of society, my existence a daily struggle in a city famed for its mighty walls and formidable defenses. Yet, it was here, in this place of vulnerability and desperation, that God orchestrated a pivotal chapter in the unfolding narrative of His people.
The Hebrews, led by Moses, then Joshua, were on the cusp of claiming the Promised Land. Jericho stood as the first formidable barrier in their path. As fate would have it, two Hebrew spies came to my inn, seeking refuge and intelligence. Recognizing an opportunity orchestrated by a power beyond my understanding, I chose to harbor these men, risking my life and betraying my city.
Why did I, a Canaanite prostitute, choose to aid the spies of Israel? The stories of the Hebrew God had permeated our city's walls. Tales of parted seas, vanquished armies, and a God who fought for His people instilled in us a fear and acknowledgment of His supreme power. In the moment of decision, I chose to align myself with this God, believing in His sovereignty and His promise to His people.
In exchange for my protection, I sought assurance for the safety of my family. A scarlet cord, hanging from my window, became the symbol of this pact—a promise of salvation and deliverance. When Jericho's walls crumbled, only my house stood unscathed, a testament to the faithfulness of God.
What followed was an integration into a community that was once foreign to me. I, the outcast of Jericho, was welcomed into the fold of God's chosen people. This acceptance was not merely a gesture of gratitude but a recognition of a shared faith in the God of Israel.
My marriage to Salmon, a leader within the tribe of Judah, was a turning point. It marked a complete restoration and a new identity. No longer was I defined by my past, but by my faith and place within the community of God's people. Our union was blessed with a son, Boaz, who would continue the legacy of faith and become a pivotal figure in the lineage of David and Jesus.
My story, woven into the tapestry of God's grand narrative, serves as a reminder that no one is beyond the reach of His grace. My inclusion in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, is not a mere footnote but a proclamation of the all-encompassing nature of God's redemptive love. It speaks of a God who uses the unlikely, the overlooked, and the marginalized to fulfill His divine purposes.
To you, the followers of Jesus Christ, I extend this message: Embrace the breadth and depth of God's grace. Let my story encourage you to look beyond the confines of convention, to see the potential for redemption and purpose in every life. God's plans are often hidden in the most unexpected places and people.
As you navigate your faith journey, remember that the God of Israel, the God who brought down the walls of Jericho, is the same God who sent His Son to break down the walls of sin and death. He is a God who delights in transforming stories of despair into narratives of hope and purpose.
In closing, I urge you to hold fast to this God of wonders, to trust in His plans, and to open your hearts to the breadth of His mercy. May my story be a beacon of hope, a reminder that no past is too checkered, no life too broken, for the redeeming touch of God.
In His Redeeming Love,
Rahab, a Witness of Grace
