A Fresh Start: Learning from the Past to Build a Holier Future
TODAY'S FOCUS IS: Embracing God’s Transforming Work in Our Lives
“. . . he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
Men of God,
God is at work in every one of us, shaping us into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. It’s a promise, and it’s a process (Philippians 1:6). But here’s the deal: God doesn’t do it alone. He invites us into the transformation, calling us to actively participate by pursuing holiness, growing in character, and making choices that reflect His light.
The start of a new year is the perfect moment to pause, reflect, and get intentional about that work. Let’s face it—life moves fast, and without taking the time to evaluate, we can slip into autopilot. Before we know it, a year has passed, and we’ve missed opportunities to grow closer to God, to deepen our relationships, and to align our lives with His purpose.
What Worked? What Didn’t?
1. Reflecting on the Good:
Take a moment to look back on the last twelve months. What relationships brought life and encouragement? Which practices drew you closer to God? What moments reminded you of His presence and faithfulness? These are the things that worked. They’re gifts from God meant to spur us on.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17).
2. Acknowledging the Struggles:
Now, let’s be honest about what didn’t work. Were there relationships that drained you or pulled you away from God? Habits or practices that felt good in the moment but left you empty or burdened? Recognizing these isn’t about shame—it’s about clarity. It’s about inviting God to show you where change is needed.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24).
Getting Intentional for the Year Ahead
Reflection isn’t enough—we need action. It’s time to draw up a game plan for holiness.
Increase What Works:
What relationships, habits, or practices fueled your faith? Make time for them. Prioritize the people who challenge and encourage you spiritually. Commit to the disciplines that draw you closer to God—prayer, Bible study, worship, service.
Cut Back on What Doesn’t:
What choices or distractions pulled you away from God? Identify them, and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and strength to reduce or eliminate their influence. Whether it’s cutting back on screen time, reevaluating certain relationships, or turning away from harmful habits, small changes can have a big impact.
Focus on Holiness:
Holiness isn’t about perfection—it’s about setting yourself apart for God’s purposes. It’s about aligning your life with His character. Ask yourself, “What would bring more goodness and light into my daily life?” Then, commit to pursuing those things.
“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:14-15).
Challenge of the Week
Spend 30 minutes this week in quiet reflection. Write down two lists:
What worked last year—relationships, practices, experiences that grew your faith.
What didn’t work—choices, habits, or distractions that hindered your walk with God.
Then, create a simple plan for 2025. Commit to bringing more of the good and less of the bad into your life. Share your plan with a trusted brother who can hold you accountable.
Let’s Pray
Father God,
Thank You for the work You’re doing in my life, even when I don’t see it. Help me to reflect honestly on the past year and to learn from it. Show me what’s good and pleasing in Your eyes and what I need to leave behind. Give me the courage to make changes and the strength to follow through. Lord, as I step into this new year, align my heart with Yours, so that I can walk in Your light and fulfill the purpose You’ve called me to. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Brothers, the path to holiness starts with small, intentional steps. Let’s Get To Work!
