Drift does not announce itself. It does not show up as a loud decision to walk away. It happens quietly. A little less focus. A little less urgency. A little less obedience in the areas that used to matter. Most people do not notice it while it is happening. They only recognize it after distance has already been created.
BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT
Wisdom pays attention to small shifts and corrects them early before they become full separation.
OUR SPRINGBOARD FOR TODAY’S DISCUSSION IS:
“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”
Hebrews 2:1 (ESV)
Coffee and Calling
It is amazing what God can do with a coffee and a calling.

Drift rarely feels dangerous in the moment.
It feels small. It feels manageable. It feels like something you can correct later. That is why it is so effective. You do not resist it because you do not recognize it as a threat. You think you are still on track, just moving a little slower or taking a little space. Over time, that space becomes distance.
Hebrews makes the warning clear. Pay close attention. Not casual attention. Not occasional reflection. Close attention. That means you stay aware of your direction, not just your intentions.
I have seen this happen in my own life in ways that were easy to justify. It was not a major decision to step away from what God was doing. It was small compromises. Letting things slide that I used to be disciplined about. Putting off time with God because something else felt more urgent. None of it seemed like a big deal at the time. But over time, I could feel the shift.
Drift changes your sensitivity.
When you are locked in, you recognize God’s voice quickly. You respond with clarity. When drift sets in, everything starts to feel less sharp. You hesitate more. You question more. You feel less anchored, even if you cannot explain why.
The danger is not just that you move away from where you should be. It is that you get used to it.
Wisdom interrupts that pattern.
Wisdom does not wait until you are far off course. It notices the small shifts and corrects them immediately. It brings you back to what you already know is right before the distance grows.
Correction does not have to be dramatic. It just has to be intentional.
You do not need a complete reset. You need realignment.
Right now, there may be something small in your life that you have been overlooking. A habit that has slipped. A boundary that has weakened. A commitment that has softened. It may not feel serious, but it is the beginning of drift.
Wisdom calls that out early.
Not to condemn you, but to bring you back before the distance grows.

Closing Whisper Prayer
Father, help me recognize when I begin to drift. Give me awareness to see small shifts and the discipline to correct them quickly. Keep my heart aligned with You and my steps steady in Your direction. Strengthen my focus and keep me anchored in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
