Marriage isn't about flashy moments or picture-perfect Instagram posts. It’s about the quiet, daily choices to love, even when it’s hard. That’s the heartbeat of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8—where love is more than a feeling; it’s action, sacrifice, and patience in motion. But Paul doesn’t start there. Just before diving into the “love chapter,” he makes a stunning statement: Without love, I am nothing.
Our springboard for today’s discussion is:
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal." — 1 Corinthians 13:1 (ESV)
Paul’s words cut deep. He’s saying you can be gifted, spiritual, and even sacrificial—but if love isn’t present, it all rings hollow. And this applies profoundly to marriage. You can provide, protect, plan, and pursue… but if you’re not loving your spouse the way God defines love—patiently, kindly, selflessly—then you’ve missed the very foundation.
In God’s economy, love is the core. Everything minus love equals nothing. Real love in marriage is seen when a husband chooses to serve his wife even after a long day. It’s when a wife chooses grace over criticism. It’s listening when you’d rather speak. Forgiving when you want to keep score. That kind of love isn’t natural—it’s supernatural. It’s the love Christ shows us every single day.
If your marriage feels dry or disconnected, maybe it’s time to stop measuring effort and start asking: Is this being done in love?
