25-074 Filtering Voices: Knowing When Advice is from God

TODAY'S FOCUS IS: Discernment in Listening to Others
3

Today, we’re diving into a topic that every believer must master—discerning the voices we listen to. Not every piece of advice, even from well-meaning people, aligns with God’s truth. How do we know when wisdom is from the Lord or simply worldly reasoning? Let’s get to work.

Our springboard for today’s discussion is:
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world." — 1 John 4:1

God’s Word is clear—there are many voices in the world, but not all of them are from Him. Some advice sounds wise but lacks the foundation of Scripture. Some counsel appeals to emotions or logic yet contradicts God’s principles. Even among believers, differences in spiritual maturity can impact the wisdom they share. That’s why we’re called to test the spirits.

Testing what we hear begins with Scripture. If advice doesn’t align with the Bible, it’s not from God—no matter how persuasive it sounds. The Holy Spirit also speaks to us, providing confirmation or hesitation. That unease you feel? It might be God telling you to pause and seek Him further. Wise counsel from godly, mature believers is another safeguard. Proverbs 15:22 says, "Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed." However, even those advisers must be filtered through God’s truth.

In a world filled with conflicting messages, discernment is not optional—it’s essential. By testing everything against God’s Word and the Spirit’s leading, we ensure we are walking in truth and wisdom.

Question of the Day: When have you felt uneasy about advice you received? How did you discern whether it was from God?

Let’s Pray: Lord, in a world of many voices, help us hear only Yours. Teach us to test every spirit, align with Your Word, and follow Your wisdom. Give us discernment to recognize truth and reject deception. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
